Speech, Language, Communication Skills & Self- Regulation
Between 50 - 80% of children with speech, language and communication disorders have simultaneous difficulties in self-regulation. Therefore, speech-language pathologists play a significant role in helping children develop their self-regulation skills. Addressing self-regulation in the therapy room can assist children to generalize these strategies and supports to environments outside the therapy room, helping them to successfully engage and participate in everyday interactions (Binns, Hutchinson & Cardy, 2018). Below are two videos, one about speech, language and communication skills and the other about self-regulation. They provide a brief overview about what these skills are and their importance on everyday success- both in and out of the classroom!
Executive Functioning
Executive Function is a group of cognitive skills that help us to initiate a task, focus on a task, plan, prioritize and organize information, think and act flexibly, store and recall important information and control emotions. These skills are needed throughout the day in all activities and tasks we engage in. They play a significant role in academic and social development.
Additional Information…
There are many independent and related factors that come into play with speech, language, communication and executive functioning skills. Although, every individual is different in the way they learn, one common factor is the importance of building a strong foundation by providing each individual with the tools and strategies they need to succeed!
